Application

Depending on its quality, petroleum coke can be used in industries such as graphite, smelting and chemical industry, etc

Petroleum coke, as a byproduct of petroleum, is produced in the process of petroleum processing, that is, the crude oil is distilled to separate light and heavy oil, and the heavy oil is converted into petroleum coke by hot cracking. If petroleum coke can be obtained directly from petroleum processing, then the petroleum coke is raw coke or ordinary coke. Petroleum coke has irregular shape, dark gray or black, porous structure and metallic luster.

Petroleum coke is a by-product of the refining process, not all of them are the same, and the temperature at which it is produced will greatly affect its performance and application. Most of the coke produced at the Franli is low-sulfur coke, which is mainly used for aluminum smelting and graphite manufacturing.

The main component is carbon, and the rest is hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur and metal elements. It is possible to understand the different types of petroleum coke and their characteristics, which is useful for ensuring safety during industrial use.

    Petroleum coke at different temperatures

    (1) Low-temperature: petroleum coke usually produced at a temperature below 800 °C. It has the highest sulphur content and is now produced in smaller quantities. Because sulfur emissions contribute to air pollution and have negative health effects.

    (2) Medium temperature:  petroleum coke produced at a temperature of 800 ° C to 1,200 ° C. It has a high carbon content and is suitable for use as a fuel. It is often used as a substitute for coal in power plants and cement kilns. It can also be used as a raw material for the production of anodes in the aluminum industry.

    (3) High temperature:  petroleum coke is produced at a temperature above 1200 °C. It has the lowest sulfur content compared to low-temperature petroleum coke and has the highest carbon content of all types, making it the most valuable.

    Types of petroleum coke

    (1) Green coke: This is the minimum quality of petroleum coke, produced at a temperature below 700°C. It contains high levels of impurities, including sulfur and heavy metals, making it unsuitable for use as a fuel source.

    (2) Calcined coke: This is a higher quality material that is produced at a temperature of 1200°C to 1350°C. It has a low sulfur content and is used as a fuel source in industries such as cement and power generation.

    (3) Needle coke: This is a high-quality product produced at temperatures above 1400°C. It has a low sulfur content and is used in the production of graphite electrodes for the steel industry.

Different kinds of petroleum coke applications

    (1) High temperature petroleum coke: is the purest and densest form of petroleum coke. It is commonly used as fuel for power plants and cement kilns, as well as in the production of steel and other metals. It is also used as a raw material for the production of graphite electrodes, which are used in the steel and aluminum industries.

    (2) Medium temperature petroleum coke: Its purity is lower than that of high temperature petroleum coke, but it is still suitable for many industrial applications. Medium temperature petroleum coke is commonly used as a fuel source for boilers and furnaces, as well as in the production of aluminum and other metals.

    (3) Low-temperature petroleum coke: It is the form of petroleum coke with the lowest purity and lowest density, and is usually used as a fuel source for power plants and cement kilns. It is also used in the production of bitumen and other industrial products. It has a high volatile and low-carbon content, making it unsuitable for use as a fuel. However, it can be used as a raw material for the production of carbon black, which is used in the production of tires and other rubber products.

As a versatile industrial material, it can be used in various industries. However, production temperature is an important factor affecting its performance and application. The quality of petroleum coke depends on its temperature, the higher the temperature, the better the quality.
