Natural flake graphite has superior physical and chemical properties and is widely used in metallurgy, coatings and refractory industries. It is an important non-metallic raw material that is indispensable for today’s high-tech. Flake graphite is divided into large flake graphite and fine flake graphite according to the size of its scales. Usually, large flakes refer to +32 mesh, +50 mesh, +80 mesh, and +100 mesh flake graphite.
Request a quoteAfter natural flake graphite is mined and floated, graphite products which is made of flake graphite are formed. If natural flake graphite wants to develop in a wider and deeper field, it needs deep processing.
The technical direction of deep processing of natural flake graphite mainly includes purity, particle size, shape, surface, and modification. High-purity graphite, such as raw material graphite for artificial diamond and graphite used in the nuclear industry. In terms of particle size, it is often fine powder, but flexible graphite needs large scale; In terms of shape, those requiring low specific surface area, such as the negative electrode of the lithium-ion battery, the shape of graphite is approximately spherical, and those requiring high specific surface area, such as some additives.
At present, the system of natural flake graphite deep-processing products is very rich, including high-purity graphite, expanded graphite, spherical graphite, fluorinated graphite, graphite emulsion, colloidal graphite, and so on. Among the graphite deep-processing products, high-purity graphite, expanded graphite, spherical graphite, and fluorinated graphite are the ones with more applications and more production line construction.
The first step in the fine processing of natural flake graphite is to solve the purity. Ordinary medium and high carbon graphite can not be applied in high-tech industries, and it is usually required to reach the high-purity level. As defined in the catalog of new materials in China (2004) compiled by the high technology research and development center of the Ministry of science and technology, the carbon content of flake graphite ≥ 99.9% and microcrystalline graphite ≥ 99% are high-purity graphite. Some special fields, such as nuclear energy, semiconductor, and other high-tech industries, are required to reach C ≥ 99.99%.
High purity graphite is widely used, and it is also the basic raw material of other high value-added deep-processing products. For example, the spherical graphite used in the negative electrode of a lithium battery needs high-purity graphite. The production of fluorinated graphite also needs high-purity graphite as raw material. In addition to spherical graphite and fluorinated graphite, high-purity isotropic graphite is two important pieces for the application of high-purity graphite.
Isotropic graphite material products refer to the fine structure and ultra-fine structure of graphite formed by isostatic pressing with natural flake graphite and petroleum coke as the main raw materials, and the products are block-shaped artificial graphite products. Its products mainly include graphite reflectors for the high-temperature gas-cooled reactor, graphite balls for the high-temperature gas-cooled reactor, nuclear grade graphite gasket, and electrode graphite powder for high-temperature gas-cooled reactors, semiconductor graphite, etc.
