Natural flake graphite has superior physical and chemical properties and is widely used in metallurgy, coatings and refractory industries. It is an important non-metallic raw material that is indispensable for today’s high-tech. Flake graphite is divided into large flake graphite and fine flake graphite according to the size of its scales. Usually, large flakes refer to +32 mesh, +50 mesh, +80 mesh, and +100 mesh flake graphite.

Flake graphite is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity. It has good chemical stability at room temperature and is resistant to acid, alkali, and organic solvents. In recent years, due to the more and more extensive use of lithium-ion batteries, graphite, as one of the main raw materials for the production of lithium-ion batteries, has attracted more and more attention from the international mining industry.
According to the report released by benchmark mineral intelligence, the surge in sales of electric vehicles and the rise of energy storage continue to promote the construction of lithium-ion battery super-large factories. It is estimated that in the next 10 years, the demand for graphite in the negative electrode of lithium-ion batteries may increase seven times; In the past few years, although the price of graphite has been adjusted for several rounds, the tight supply and the increasing demand of battery industry are bound to push the price of natural flake graphite up.
In 2020, China will take first place in graphite production, while Mozambique and Brazil will take second and third place respectively. China plays a leading role in the mining and refining of flake graphite to the anode supply chain.
Next, based on the data of mineral commodity summaries-2021 of us geological survey, we summarize the top 10 graphite producing areas in the world.
1. China
Graphite production: 650000 tons. China is the world’s largest producer of graphite. In 2020, the output of graphite will be 650000 tons, almost equal to that of the previous two years. In 2020, China’s graphite production will account for 62% of the total global graphite production.
Although China is now firmly in control of the graphite market, Western investors do not want China to remain dominant forever. In addition, in recent years, graphite mining countries have been trying to simplify production and improve efficiency. In order to protect the environment, China closed a factory in Shandong Province. The above reasons may further affect China’s graphite production in the future.
2. Mozambique
Graphite output: 120000 tons. In the past few years, graphite production in Mozambique has made great progress, and the output will reach 120000 tons by 2020. Syrah resources and Triton minerals are two major graphite producers in Mozambique.
A graphite mine project in Mozambique started operation in early 2018. It is reported that the mine is the largest natural flake graphite mine in the world. The mine cut production in 2019 to stabilize graphite prices. The mine is expected to operate for 50 years.
3. Brazil
Graphite output: 95000 tons. Brazil will become the third-largest graphite producer in the world in 2020, with an output of 95000 tons. Brazil’s graphite production in 2020 is 1000 tons less than that in 2019. There is little information about Brazil’s Graphite mining industry, as the country’s largest metal producer is private.
4. Madagascar
Graphite output: 47000 tons. Madagascar is the fourth largest graphite producer in the world. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, some mines in Madagascar began to increase production in 2018; East African countries are now developing more large graphite deposits.
5. India
Graphite output: 34000 tons. India’s total graphite production in 2020 is 34000 tons, lower than that in 2019. Arunachal Pradesh has nearly half of India’s Graphite reserves. There are eight major graphite producers in India, including Tirupati carbon & graphite, Chota Nagpur graphite industries, and carbon & graphite products.
6. Russia
Graphite output: 24000 tons. Russia’s graphite production in 2020 is slightly lower than that of 25100 tons in 2019. Despite this stable period, the country’s output is expected to increase significantly in the next few years due to the start-up of two investment projects, namely dalgrafit and uralgraphite. There is little further information about graphite mining in Russia.
7. Ukraine
Graphite production: 19000 tons. Ukraine’s graphite production in 2020 is lower than 20000 tons in 2019. Zavalyevskiy graphite is a large graphite manufacturer in the country. Since its operation in 1934, the company has produced up to 30000 tons of natural flake graphite per year.
8. Norway
Graphite output: 15000 tons. From 2019 to 2020, Norway’s graphite production is almost flat. All graphite deposits in the country contain flake graphite, usually of low tonnage. Most of the mines are located in areas with good development conditions, such as near the sea or near the power grid.
9. Pakistan
Graphite output: 13000 tons. There is little information about graphite mining in Pakistan.
10. Canada
Graphite output: 10000 tons. Over the past few years, interest in Canada as a potential source of graphite has been rising. Tesla said it plans to use Nevada as a major source of lithium, graphite, and cobalt for its North American lithium-ion battery super plant.
In recent years, China has produced a large amount of natural flake graphite. This is due to China’s vast resources, and many graphite mines have been unearthed. This has also promoted the vigorous development of China’s graphite. Based on the production of more different kinds of graphite, this also makes Chinese graphite better to the world
