It is an aggregate of amorphous graphite. The crystal form can be seen only under the electron microscope. Amorphous graphite ore is gray black and steel gray, generally dull, with dense massive, earthy, layered, and lamellar structures. This kind of graphite lacks luster, its lubricity is lower than that of flake graphite, and its selectivity is poor. However, the grade is high, the carbon content is generally 60% ~ 80%, a few are up to more than 90%, the ash content is 15% ~ 22%, the volatile content is 1% ~ 2%, and the moisture content is 2% ~ 7%.

Earthy graphite is also called amorphous graphite. The crystal diameter is generally less than 1 micron. It is an aggregate of microcrystalline graphite. The surface is earthy and lacks luster. High fixed carbon content, less harmful impurities, very low sulfur and iron content. Amorphous graphite is the one with the most reserves in graphite, and its crystallinity is not high. It is used to produce low-value products and is the lowest price among graphites.

    Main application of amorphous graphite

Amorphous graphite is often used to make pencil lead together with clay, which is the raw material for making pencil lead. The pen core made of graphite or pigmented clay is used as a writing medium for writing or painting tools for learning, office work, engineering drawing, art, painting, and various marks. Graphite lead raw materials and auxiliary materials include graphite and clay. Graphite is a coloring agent. Using its slipperiness and plasticity, the lead core can draw black marks, firmly adhere to the paper surface, and can be wiped off with an eraser. Graphite with high carbon content and fine particles should be selected. Clay is used as a binder, and its plasticity and cohesiveness are used to bond graphite particles together. Clay with good plasticity, low iron content and wide sintering range is required.

Why amorphous graphite can be used to make pencil lead

    (1) Lubricity: The lubricating performance of graphite depends on the size of the graphite flakes. The larger the flakes, the smaller the friction coefficient and the better the lubricating performance.

    (2) Plasticity: Graphite has good toughness and can be ground into very thin sheets. The proportion of clay mixed in graphite is different, and the hardness of the pencil lead produced is also different, and the color depth is also different. This is why we see h (hard pencil), b (soft pencil), and HB (pencil with moderate hardness) marked on pencils today. The higher the hardness, the less graphite content.

    (3) Chemical stability: Amorphous graphite has good chemical stability at room temperature, and is resistant to acid, alkali and organic solvents. Documents recorded with graphite pencils can be kept for a long time. The regular hexagons between the graphite atoms whose chemical formula is C are planar structures.

    (4) Softness: The texture of graphite is soft, because graphite is the softest kind of carbon minerals, and it is easier to cut.

The traditional use of amorphous graphite is the production of pencils, charcoal rods, refractories and casting. These downstream products mainly use amorphous graphite at an affordable price and high carbon content. Amorphous graphite is smaller in diameter than crystalline graphite particles and is nearly spherical, which has innate advantages as a raw material for isotropic graphite. Widely used as an affordable raw material in industry, chemicals and other fields, the Frarli factory can also provide high-quality and affordable amorphous graphite for you .If you are interested, you can contact us.
