If petroleum coke can be obtained directly from petroleum processing, then the petroleum coke is raw coke or ordinary coke. Petroleum coke has irregular shape, dark gray or black, porous structure and metallic luster.

    Petroleum coke is produced as a petroleum by-product in the process of petroleum processing, that is, crude oil is separated from light and heavy oil after distillation, and the heavy oil is converted into petroleum coke through thermal cracking. If petroleum coke can be obtained directly from petroleum processing, then this kind of petroleum coke is green coke or ordinary coke. Petroleum coke is irregular in shape, dark gray or black in appearance, with a porous structure and metallic luster.

    The carbon content of petroleum coke is very high, about 90%, mainly in the form of hydrocarbons. Other contents in petroleum coke, such as ash, moisture or volatile matter, are relatively low. Many petroleum cokes have a high sulfur content, roughly between 2% and 5%. Petroleum coke has a very high calorific value, and its quality is very close to that of anthracite, so it can be used as a fuel. Compared with other carbon raw materials, petroleum coke has a tighter structure, a higher degree of order, and a higher degree of crystallinity. It can be said to be a partially graphitized carbon form.

    Application of new petroleum coke materials

    Our petroleum can be applied in many materials, as following:

    (1) High specific surface area activated carbon: In the fields of chemical industry, medicine or food, activated carbon has a very wide range of applications. When preparing activated carbon with high specific surface area, mix alkaline activator and petroleum coke particles, and the petroleum coke preparation process should be appropriate, and the obtained activated carbon can exceed the surface area of ​​3000m2/g. The particle size of petroleum coke raw materials should not be too small, generally between 100~200um. To maximize the specific surface area, the activation temperature must also be between 700 and 800 °C. Moreover, the activation time should be less than 2h.

    (2) Electrorheological smart materials: Electrorheological smart materials include materials such as piezoelectric ceramics, electrorheological and shape memory alloys, covering a wide range. Among them, the viscosity of the electrorheological fluid of the electrorheological material can be changed from low to high in an instant under the action of an external electric field of a certain strength, and it may even become a solid, so it has been paid attention to and widely used. Such as clutches, shock absorbers and hydraulic valves and so on. Petroleum coke is used in the development of electrorheological materials. After grinding, particles of 10-75 μm can be obtained. By dispersing in methyl silicone oil with a viscosity of 50 mm2 /s, the volume fraction of methyl silicone oil is between 33%~ Between 35%. In the case of an external field strength of 2kV/mm, if the viscosity of the material is 20 times greater than the zero field viscosity, it means that its electrorheological effect is very good.     (3) Lithium battery anode material: The positive and negative poles of the lithium-ion battery are intercalated materials with different potentials, so that lithium ions are deintercalated from the positive electrode and intercalated in the negative electrode when the battery is charging. When discharging, the situation is just the opposite. To develop a lithium battery with high performance, the first thing is to find a suitable negative electrode material, whose working voltage should be as low as possible, the amount of lithium intercalation should be high, and the reversibility of lithium ion deintercalation is good. Carbon materials are the most successful anode materials, including petroleum coke, activated carbon, graphite, etc.

    (4) Prebaked anode technology for aluminum: This technology will occupy a large consumer demand in electrolytic aluminum enterprises, and its raw materials are mainly low and medium sulfur petroleum coke. The rapid development of the aluminum industry has driven the demand for prebaked anodes, and the supply of petroleum coke that can meet the production conditions of prebaked anodes has begun to fall short of demand. At the same time, people’s demand for high-sulfur petroleum coke is also increasing. However, when high-sulfur petroleum coke is used for the production of prebaked anodes for aluminum, it will be subject to relevant environmental protection requirements due to the high average concentration of sulfur dioxide produced by it, and the application range is relatively limited.

    The demand for petroleum coke in major metallurgical and industrial industries has greatly expanded, and the demand for lithium battery anodes has great potential.
