Petroleum coke, as a byproduct of petroleum, is produced in the process of petroleum processing, that is, the crude oil is distilled to separate light and heavy oil, and the heavy oil is converted into petroleum coke by hot cracking. If petroleum coke can be obtained directly from petroleum processing, then the petroleum coke is raw coke or ordinary coke. Petroleum coke has irregular shape, dark gray or black, porous structure and metallic luster.

Characteristics of needle petroleum coke
Needle petroleum coke has the advantages of small resistivity, small thermal expansion coefficient, strong impact resistance, high mechanical strength, good oxidation resistance and low consumption.
Bitumen needle petroleum coke is different from ordinary asphalt coke in appearance. Ordinary asphalt coke has the shape of general coke, with coarse pores and porosity up to 50%. Bitumen needle petroleum coke is needle petroleum crystal, fiber streamlined structure, which is characterized by small expansion coefficient, small specific resistance, large apparent density (small porosity), low reactivity, easy graphitization.
Production process of needle petroleum coke
(1) Raw material pretreatment
Impurities are mainly removed once to ensure that the mass fraction in refined asphalt is less than 1.0%. If the vacuum flash-plus compression poly production process is used, refined bitumen with almost no QI1 can be obtained. Its parameters mainly control the vacuum flash temperature and pressure, add compression poly temperature and pressure and polycondensation time. The vacuum flash process results in a suitable density and suitable aromatization. The addition of compression poly process can obtain polycondensation bitumen with high content of mesophase precursors (β components), and the content of QI2 can be reduced.
(2) Delay the coking process
The delayed coking process mainly uses the plastic flow of the mesophase material and the order of the molecular arrangement and the shear force generated by the gas phase product, which is called the so-called “airflow coke wire”, and finally forms a needle petroleum coke with a streamlined fiber structure. In order to prevent coking, 2940KPa high-pressure water vapor is injected into the furnace tube to make the asphalt oil pass through the critical decomposition area in a high-speed turbulent state.
(3) Calcination process
The needle petroleum coke with streamlined fiber structure is heated to 1300~1450 °C through the rotary kiln and calcined to improve the true density of coke and reduce volatile content, improve carbon content and strength and conductivity, and improve the coke structure, so as to obtain high-quality asphalt needle petroleum coke.
Application of needle petroleum coke
(1) Electrolytic aluminum industry: Electrolytic aluminum in aluminum smelting enterprises uses two kinds of anodes, one is the anodic paste roasted in the electrolysis process, and the other is the pre-roasted anode. Pre-roasted anodes also improve the operating conditions of the electrolyzer. At present, the demand for modified asphalt is large.
(2) Ultra-high power electrode: There are two raw materials for ultra-high power graphite electrode production, needle petroleum coke (aggregate) and binder bitumen. Electrodes for ultra-high power furnaces must have high electrical conductivity, high thermal shock resistance and oxidation resistance
In the future, with the increase in the number of ultra-high power electric arc furnaces with large capacity, high efficiency and low comprehensive cost, the demand for ultra-high power graphite electrodes will increase, and the demand for needle petroleum coke from graphite electrodes will still grow.
